Do What Has To Be Done

Do what has to be done.

“Doing what needs to be done may not make you happy, but it will make you great.”-George Bernard Shaw

It’s not always easy to do the right thing, but no one said it would be. My granddad once told me about a time he was working on getting some new channels cut to reduce flooding here in Texas. He and everyone he worked with knew a big storm was brewing, and they had to get something done. It wasn’t time for him to sit at home or out in the barn. It was a time for action.

The following day, you couldn’t see more than a few feet from the rain that was falling. Making matters worse, he was already feeling sick.

My granddad left the work he had to do out in the fields and went and got them channels dug out in the pouring rain. He did what had to be done.

I remembered that conversation the other day when I talked about the heart catheterization I underwent a few years back.

The day after the procedure, I was sitting in the office and heard yelling and screaming from the street. It sounded as if someone was being murdered.

When I went outside, I was shocked at what I saw: a man, if you can call him that, punching his wife and a tiny baby. Heart catheterization or not, he had to be stopped. Calling the Sheriff was not an option as he was bout three hours away.

Between one other guy and me, I pulled that no good excuse of a man off that woman and settled it all right there. The Sheriff said the man told him that he was ready to go to jail just as long as the Sheriff got him out of there.

There are times when no one else wants to work – hungover, not feeling well, or don’t want to muck out stalls or clean milking machines – but you know it must be done. You may be the only one out there, but it gets done.

No matter how you feel that day, no matter what’s happening around you or within you, get up, show up and do what has to be done.
